Gene Sarazen (1902-1999) won his first major, the US open at the age of 20 followed by the USPGA in the same year. Having won the USPGA in 1923, his victories lay fallow until 1932, after he had invented the sand iron, when he won the Open and the US Open two weeks later. His last round in the latter was 66, a round Bobby Jones described as ‘the finest competitive exhibition on record.’ In the 1935 Masters he played perhaps the most famous shot of all, a four wood at the par 5 125th hole, which he holed for an albatross and described as ‘the shot heard around the world’. In 1973 he holed in one at the Postage Stamp at Troon at the age of 71. He was the first man to win the so called Grand Slam.
