Description
An attractive scared-neck transitional driver by J&D Clark of Musselburgh, with beech head, stamp to crown, horn insert, original hickory shaft stamped below the grip, old leather grip.
Very good condition with tight whipping, this is a lovely club in fine shape, circa 1895.
The Clark brothers were apprentice club and ball makers in Willie Park’s golf works in Musselburgh. In 1893 they opened their own business primarily supplying the wholesale and export markets. By 1896 they were recognized as the second largest firm in Scotland with a workforce of over 40 men. They opened two retail branches, in Edinburgh and Dunbar, complementing their warehouse and works in Musselburgh. In the later 1890s their bestseller was the ‘Musselburgh’ gutta percha ball, in 1898 alone exporting over 108,000 to the US. Their work is always of the highest order.
