In 1770 in Edinburgh, James McEwan founded the most famous family of clubmakers, a business that would last over 200 years and include many generations, all known for their exquisite craftsmanship and occasionally fine play on the links. ‘In 1770 James left Stirling and settled in Edinburgh as a clubmaker, since that time the name McEwan on a club has been recognized as the hallmark of excellence’ [Golf Illustrated 1900]. Through the years the McEwans supplied clubs and balls to all the main centres, including Aberdeen, Blackheath, Montrose, Perth, Musselburgh, various clubs in Edinburgh and of course St Andrews itself. Through their dedication and superb skills the McEwans helped shape the evolution of the golf club and therefore the development of golf itself. ‘As Philp was to St Andrews, so was the firm of McEwan and Son to Edinburgh and Musselburgh’. [Golf 1895]. For more see McEwan Family History.
